Sunday, we’ve come a long way…

“[Bicycling] has done more to emancipate woman than any one thing in the world. I rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel. It gives her a feeling of self-reliance and independence the moment she takes her seat; and away she goes, the picture of untrammelled womanhood.”

Susan B Anthony

I am curious;
What do women (or men) of today think about this statement?

    1. Well, it does make me laugh. I think riding a bike gave some sense of freedom–like when you are a kid and get on your bike and feel free of parental control and restriction. But whether or not it was such a big deal in emancipation I don’t know. Somehow I can’t see it as a picture of “untrammeled” womanhood.

  1. In the movie, Hysteria, the female lead (an early feminist) rides a bike . . . and works for emancipation.

    Before bicycling permitted it, women rarely had a chance to steer their own ship.

  2. When I read that, it made me wonder of other things that people in the future might think of what we (men or women) value today

    Interesting stuff..

    1. Of course, we all value our freedom but we tend to forget that there is no freedom without boundaries. Only time will tell if the future generations understand this better than we do.

  3. My AP history students had to do a series of essays on roots women’s lib one year. It is remarkable that in the 20’s, some women began to feel liberation as they began to smoke and drink in public. Talk about misplaced values….

  4. Funny that you should mention Susan B. Anthony. She’s the reason, along with her pal Elizabeth Cady Stanton, that I make sure to vote. Have you ever seen the Ken Burns film about them? Brave women alright and yes, a bike was the beginning of their independence. Imagine living then? Loved the quote. Hi Teddy!!!

    1. Hi Ms. Susannah!

      Mama didn’t see the film because we doesn’t have a TV. Well, we have a TV but no TV service. We watch movies from Netflix on it though.

      Your friend,
      Teddy

      1. I have a TV but no cable. I watch movies too. Oh Teddy, we have so much on common. If only I had a tail.

        1. What is it with peoples? No tails. So hard to figure out what you are thinking or feeling.

    1. Wheels do provide a means to freedom. Must have been a challenge to ride in those dresses…
