Tuesday Chatter at the Cafe
Ergophobia is an abnormal fear of work or an aversion to work.
I learned this today at Dictionary.com’s Word of the Day.
I can’t say I have this phobia, at least not an abnormal fear of work. Sometimes there is work to do that seems a bit more than I can handle or something that is outside of my comfort zone, and there are times when I think I will not do a good job or won’t be able to finish the task. But it is not really a fear, certainly not an abnormal fear, just a nagging feeling that I have been given more than I can deal with.
However, I may have a slight aversion to work. Not to the point of not doing something that needs to be done but I have been known to procrastinate. In fact, I can make procrastination into a fine art of avoidance.
Ergophobia may be a new word for me but definitely one I will remember. Somehow it sounds more acceptable to say I have ergophobia than to say I am too lazy or just don’t want to do something. People are usually understanding of folks with phobias not so much for those of us who are avoiding work because we don’t want to do it.

Aha, now I have a good excuse for my failure to get tasks accomplished, I’m not so sure it’s an abnormal fear, but it certainly sounds convincing! :-)) Now we need a word for folks like me who don’t get around to visiting their friends blogs, and that’s definitely not a phobia, I suspect procrastination and a mind that is always distracted! Love you much XOXO
I have been having problems with time management lately. Procrastination is surely the reason and I have become easily distracted. I get so far behind visiting that if I tried to catch up on all the posts I missed nothing would get done so I just start at the top and hope to get at least a bit caught up.
I know a lot of people that suffer from this affliction. They are in homeless camps all across America.
Have a fabulous day. ♥
I worked with some folks who seemed to have this phobia and made a living in spite of it.
I am giggling again, thinking of using this and watching people’s faces! Haha! Thank you!
Have you used the word?

Sharing fun post by Patricia with an interesting word – ergophobia
I love this word. It almost sounds sophisticated. Thank you for visiting the cafe. Reblogging.
A sophisticated phobia…makes a phobia sound kinda fun instead of scary. Thank you for the reblog!
You’re right. Using the words sounds better than saying we are lazy, even if once in a while to avoid a job we can put off. Interesting word. New to me. 🙂
It was new to me, too. I love to find new words…and sometimes I remember them. 🙂
