Friday, scary storm…

storm

There is always a lot to celebrate every week but this week even more.  On Wednesday evening…rush hour time…there was a terrible storm here.  It didn’t last long, about 30 minutes or so, but it will be a while before things are back to normal for a lot of folks.  The thunder was so bad Teddy, who usually sleeps through a storm, was in a Teddy-tizzy.  And when the lightning started he began pacing and growling…yes, cats growl sometimes.

I saw one lightening bolt come straight down and split a tree then it was uprooted by the wind and landed on an office building destroying the porch and part of the front offices.  Another tree that was uprooted landed on two cars and flattened them…I mean flat!  After the storm one of the owners kept walking around pushing at branches and saying , “this isn’t good” over and over.  Two trees were uprooted in the side yard of the building I live in…but no damage to anything.

In this neighborhood many houses have trees not only in the yard they have trees inside them.  We were without power maybe a couple of hours but it was still light out so it wasn’t too bad.  Except my supper was in the oven and I was getting pretty hungry.  Of course, many don’t have their cable service back yet…that always seems to take a while to get back to working order.  Wonder why that is?  AT&T phone service and internet came back on as soon as the power did.  Very glad I have AT&T.

All these words just to get to what I am celebrating this week.

There was a terrible storm with lots of damage done but no one was hurt.

Today, I think we have much to celebrate.

Friday, to the dentist I went…

I went to the dentist this week.
I really like my dentist but I really don’t like going to the dentist.
I think it goes back to when I was a kid and dentistry wasn’t pleasant.
These days it isn’t bad even when you must have something done other than a cleaning and check-up.

Anyway, I went and had my teeth cleaned and checked…first time in a few years.
When I had insurance I went to the dentist when I didn’t have insurance I didn’t
now I have insurance again and I went.

teeth

I have nice shiny clean teeth now.

And a cavity.
So I will be going back to see the dentist.
Bummer.

brush

I did get a new toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss.
But I didn’t get a gold star sticker.

Today, I think I will celebrate having a great dentist… and I have dental insurance again.

Black Cat Book Review

Knee Deep and Rising by Bob Walkup

This is a book of short stories about a man’s life.  A man who has traveled the world, a minister, husband, father, mentor, friend.  A man of humor and faith, intelligence, love, personal challenges and hope.  His stories reveal a man of honor and humility who has had an interesting life that he shares openly, the good and the not so good.

Bob tells his many stories in an easy conversational way.  They are down to earth and engaging.  He tells of his years as a Presbyterian minister in Floridaknee   and  his travels around the world with the Medical Benevolence Foundation (a Presbyterian ministry) that sound exhausting. And his return to the pulpit in North Carolina.  He accomplished much but it strained his marriage and made some underlying health problems worsen.

Besides his life in ministry there are stories of his childhood in South Carolina, things he learned delivering morning newspapers to neighbors,  his love of baseball, a part-time music career, hard work, school, family.  My favorite stories are the ones about Anne, the girl next door, and their love. There is one story about them and a car with foggy windows   and his father that is too funny.   The story about their first date is sweet and tender.

The hardest  part of his life to read about is his battle with mental illness.  Yet, it is probably where you get to know Bob the best.  His honesty is heart wrenching, his faith is compelling, and his love for Anne, his children, and extended family is transparent.

Bob Walkup has been, and is, on a remarkable journey.  He has written a book well worth reading.  And I don’t say that because Anne is my friend!

Tuesday,I believe there is still green…

We have had a lot of rain.
More than usual for this time of year.

The bad about summer rain here is that the humidity is awful, like nearly 100%.
When the temperatures are in the 90* it is just steamy.

The good about the summer rain is that everything is green and lush.

view

This is the view from my balcony.
Usually there is a bit of brown on the trees because of the heat and dryness.
But because of the rain it is still Spring green out there.

Today, I think that seeing the green makes me believe summer rain is more good than bad.
