“You can be happy, or you can be unhappy.
It’s just according to how you look at things.”
Walt Disney

Not every moment is a happy one. Sometimes stuff happens that makes us unhappy. Life is never, or very rarely, perfect. That’s the way life is. It is good or bad, and most of the time, it is just okay.

I am pretty satisfied with okay. In fact, to me, okay is pretty good and much better than bad. When things are okay, I am happy. Life is usually good, so I am not often unhappy.

Sadly, I have an unhappy friend. In all the years I have known her, I have never heard her laugh. Never! She does occasionally smile, and sometimes she has something positive to say, not often but sometimes.

Admittedly, she has had some hard times and disappointments, but that is the way it is for all of us. It is up to us to come to terms with the bad and sad. If it means asking for help, do it. If it means forgiving what seems unforgivable, do it…as often as needed.

Asking for help from friends or seeing a therapist is not a weakness. It takes strength and courage to be open and honest about troubles and pain. Forgiving doesn’t mean forgetting, but it does mean letting go. Letting go of the bad memories. Letting go of the hopes and wishes that were part of the dreams that didn’t come true. Letting go of those that caused pain and grief.

I have talked to my friend about these things. She says I don’t understand because I have a good life and never had to face hardship. If she only knew what I am not telling her! Maybe someday, I will be able to be completely open with her. But I still have work to do before that can happen.

Life isn’t easy, but it is good.
As Mr. Disney said, it’s all in how you look at it.

Monday musings…

Your living is determined not so much by
what life brings to you as by
the attitude you bring to life;
Not so much by what happens to you as by
the way your mind looks at what happens.
Khalil Gibran

Sometimes life is good and sometimes it’s bad. Sometimes it is beautiful and sometimes it’s ugly. Whatever our lives are like at any given time is pretty much up to us. How we act, or react, to the happenings in life makes a difference.

In bad and ugly times we can yell and scream, we can hide and cry, feel sorry for ourselves and be miserable. Or we can call and ask for help, get up and work on solutions to the problems and be productive. Most importantly, we must remember that we made it through tough times before, and not only survived but are stronger and smarter than we were. The good and beautiful life will return with all its happiness and joy.

The good and beautiful life is a treasure. Granted, sometimes that treasure gets hidden under a lot of trash and it takes determination to find it again. And when we find it again we may have to do some work to get it back to what it was. In truth, difficult times help us understand the worth of the treasure.

Bottom line:
It’s all about attitude.

Monday Musings…

“Most folks are as happy as
they make up their minds to be.”

I totally agree with Abe on this. It’s up to us whether or not we are happy. I am not a Pollyanna kind of person who thinks everything is wonderfully rosy all the time. I know there are times in all our lives that are pretty awful. Bad stuff happens that’s a fact of life but how we choose to respond is up to us.

We can choose to wallow in self-pity feeling sorry for ourselves or we can stand tall and look for solutions to the problems we face. Yes, we may become depressed and sad. Not everything in life brings a smile or laugh. Some things make us angry or we cry in our distress and feel alone. How we react to our feelings will determine how we respond and the next steps we take.

Life is a journey that is, if not easy usually enjoyable, but not always. There will be mud puddles and some trash along the path and sometimes mountains to climb or tunnel through or places that have been flooded and need a bridge built. It is up to us how we do what needs to be done and what we focus on, the trials or the trail up ahead still to be explored.

It takes a strong will and courage, a sense of humor and a loving heart, and the people we love who love us to face the challenges of life. It may be easier to be miserable but being happy is so much more…much much more!
