Ergophobia…

Ergophobia is an abnormal fear of work or an aversion to work.
I learned this today at Dictionary.com’s Word of the Day.

I can’t say I have this phobia, at least not an abnormal fear of work.  Sometimes there is work to do that seems a bit more than I can handle or something that is outside of my comfort zone, and there are times when I think I will not do a good job or won’t be able to finish the task.  But it is not really a fear, certainly not an abnormal fear, just a nagging feeling that I have been given more than I can deal with.

However, I may have a slight aversion to work.  Not to the point of not doing something that needs to be done but I have been known to procrastinate. In fact, I can make procrastination into a fine art of avoidance.

Ergophobia may be a new word for me but definitely one I will remember. Somehow it sounds more acceptable to say I have ergophobia than to say I am too lazy or just don’t want to do something. People are usually understanding of folks with phobias not so much for those of us who are avoiding work because we don’t want to do it.

Celebrate the Small Things · weather · whatever! · work

CTST’s today…

The sun is shining and it is not windy and freezing.
The guys installing the new balconies are back to work.
If it is too cold the epoxy used with the screws is ineffective.
Definitely, want the railings to be secure.
If it’s too windy they can’t work because it isn’t safe for the installers.
Certainly, want them to be safe and secure.

The cats are not happy about the noise.
Especially Teddy.

He just wants it done.
It’s hard to nap with all the noise.

Jack’s okay.

20170118_124000
Not exactly happy but putting up with it.

So, today I am celebrating
the good weather and working conditions,
the guys working and doing a good job,
and my sweet catkids.

She worked so hard to get to this place. She is proud of what she has accomplished though some people think she is showing off and that she thinks she is better than they are. She knows she isn’t better than those people but she also knows she wants to have a better life than they have. Her hard work and determination will not be in vain.

People and work…

In Other Words prompt

Most people work just hard enough not to get fired
and paid just enough money not to quit.”
George Carlin

I will have to say this has been me at times.  I have had jobs I really didn’t like and really didn’t work that hard at, just enough to keep the job.  Those were jobs that were just a paycheck, usually not much of a paycheck,  and nothing more. I clocked in and did the work and clocked out.

There were also some jobs that the pay was decent and the work was challenging  but not all that interesting that I stayed not because I was happy but because I got paid a good wage. It is a miserable way to live and I am glad to not be in that place anymore.

IMAG00252Now I work because I want to not because I have to. I work just three days a week and they are short days, not eight hours. I like what I do and I’m fine being there but it is also good to know I can leave whenever I want.

I guess I agree with George’s assessment of the workforce. I think people have the attitude they do about work because there is little freedom for creativity and too many hours of boring tedious repetitive tasks that never end. There is also too often a great divide between the employers and employees. There are lines that are not to be crossed and maybe they should be. Maybe the biggest thing now is that there is little security or loyalty and lots of uncertainty in the workplace today. I think people have probably been saying this since the dawn of time clocks and paychecks.
